- Q: How do hairballs interfere with a cat's ability to process their food?
- A: A carnivore's gut is designed to handle fur, its own as well as fur attached to prey. But when a large amount of hair is ingested, it tends to collect in the cat's stomach. It forms a wad commonly called a hairball. It can get in the way of normal digestion by causing irritation to the stomach lining. They delay normal gastric emptying and reduce appetite. Vets find that 90-95 percent of vomiting in cats is due to hairballs.
