- Q: What is "canine disarming"?
- A: Canine disarming is a procedure performed on dogs that have bitten people after all forms of behavioral treatment and training have been exhausted. It has been said by notable dog trainers that once a dog has crossed the line and bitten fiercely, that we cannot expect them to be trained otherwise; hence the need for disarming, which is preferable to euthanasia. The procedure is performed by doing a laser vital pulpotomy at the level of the canines. This takes away the slicing, knife effect of the canines and makes them blunt trauma instruments. We also reduce and blunt the incisors, further lessening the bite effect. Upon recovery, most dogs are intelligent enough to understand they are no longer knife damaging biters but more like pinchers at best. One must still use common sense at all times when dealing with these pets and protect yourself, but they truly become disarmed.
